Amelia Hughes is a character I really like from the Infinity Train1. She’s a character that attempted to make train cars for the titular train, making a whole lot of mistakes she has to atone for, like me2. This is my attempt to recreate the jumpsuit she’s issued in Season 3.

From the Ashes3
I was in the process of resin printing Infinity Train cars for my Kickstarter project when I spilled resin on myself. My parents had forced me to work outside because of the smell, so I was in direct sunlight when it happened. I noticed a warm feeling on my legs before I noticed the smoke coming off of a large green stain on my coveralls. I never knew resin curing was such an exothermic reaction and I’m so glad I took safety seriously (or as seriously as I could given the circumstances) because I barely got any on my skin. This was when I decided to officially cancel that project and refund everyone.

At first, I thought my coveralls would be salvageable if I finished curing them in the sun and massaged the resin out, like hot glue or something. Unfortunately, this is when I learnt that clothes can shatter. A year or 2 before this, I’d actually bought materials for and drafted a pattern for an Infinity Train jumpsuit using a pair of jeans and jacket as a reference but given that I had a real set of coveralls now (that I can’t wear anymore), I decided to take it apart to copy into a sewing pattern.

For those wondering, my coveralls are Hard Yakka’s Cotton Drill Coverall in Khaki4 size 82R. I got them from a now closed workwear store where a kind Chinese lady gave me a once over and instinctively found the perfect size. Never in my life have I had such a magical Goldilocks feeling while trying on clothes before nor after.

In preparation for Supanova Comic Con 2025, having left it to the last minute, I spent all night cutting and sewing together a jumpsuit but ultimately decided wasn’t good enough to wear. The material I chose was very thin and transparent; the arms were tapered too much because the coveralls I based it off had cuffs that are closed using buttons; the zipper creates a unsightly ridge; the collar is too floppy. I didn’t bother putting on any belt loops. Also, in the hurry, instead of creating a paper pattern, I traced the disassembled pieces of the coveralls directly onto the material.
I labelled this project as “Unfinished” because I intend to return to it in the future. I’ll also make a pattern available when I do.
- Despite its popularity, it was cancelled and subsequently removed to please shareholders. You cannot watch it anymore (legally). Personally, I believe that if an IP holder stops selling access to a piece of media, it should (maybe after 5 years) automatically enter the public domain instead of turning into lost media. ↩︎
- Straight out of highschool, a naive Sskki created a Kickstarter to sell toy Infinity Trains and after grueling few years, had to cancel the project and chose to refund everyone. For a long time, it was one of my biggest regrets in life, but I’ve made peace with it because I think I’ve done all I can to set things right and I suppose I’ve also learnt a lot from the experience. ↩︎
- Metaphorically ↩︎
- They don’t offer it in Khaki anymore, so I got the their lightweight version as a replacement. Despite only being $10 bucks cheaper, it just feels significantly lower quality. I guess it’s supposed to have thinner material but they come with plastic snap buttons instead of metal ones. ↩︎
